Adventures in Europe - Princess cake

So here we are, in this post I will aim to tell you about the awesomeness that is princess cake. Which is a traditional Swedish cake which children are normally given on their birthdays with a small rose made out of marzipan on top.

It gets its name from the legend that the princesses in Sweden really enjoyed eating it, and has stayed as a permanent Swedish cake since the 1930's.

I took the above photo with my Nikon Camera. First time really using it and well I think it came out OK.

Right on to the cake.

Base layer is a light a fluffy sponge, follow by a thin layer of jam. The one we tried had raspberry. There is then another larger layer of sponge followed by custard, fresh cream and then sponge.

The green outer layer is marzipan, I normally hate marzipan but this is fantastic its really gooey and sticks to the roof of your mouth.

Flavor wise we get hints of vanilla, a slight sourness from the raspberry jam. I think if the jam was missing it would be a very bland.

You don't pick up the almond at all from the marzipan. Mag was a massive fan of the marzipan as it was sticky and messy!

Not really sure what else we can say about this other than its just fantastic. All the layers seem to complement each other, it's not a rich cake either. It's very light and fluffy.

I would happily recommend this to anyone who is able to try it.

We would give this 10 out of 10, and if we see this out and about we might buy some more!
